I know I write an entry about what happened on 9/11 2001 every anniversary. Its been eight years since the day. Its raining. The names are being read out at Ground Zero. And The second moment of silance just happened remembering the second plane crashing in to the second tower. So much has happened in eight years. Lives have changed and or moved on. Children have gotten older or grew up. We never forget, though.
When I look back on it all, I think about how one minute people were alive and the next they weren't. The other thing I think about is the fact that a horrible disaster brought so many people together.
I remember where I was eight years ago. I remember what happened during the next two months after the fact. I'm thankful to be alive. I'm saddened by those who were killed, changing the lives of their loved ones forever.
Its screwed up, I know, but when I think about 9/11, I am thankful for the people around me. I will never forget those who have been affected by 9/11 by losing their loved ones or dealing with illnesses. I remember volunteering with Nicky for the Salvation Army during that time and how we helped people by simply serving them food and a hot or cold drink. Nicky gave people her famouse "Nicky Hug" and believe it or not, it made people feel a little better.
I just found out in an email from my boss that this day is now being called a "Day of Service" where we are called to help people out with an act of kindness like helping out the elderly, and or disabled, children, etc. This is something we should probably be doing every day, and I will admit that its sad that it took terrorists to hijack two airplanes and crash them into two beautiful building filled with hardworking people, to accomplish such a day.
I also remember what Nicky said while we were both at a bar one afternoon watching the funeral for the poor Chaplin who was killed by a body that fell ontop of him while he was giving another person their last rites. We were talking about how this disaster brought everyone together and how people in NYC were being so nice. She said: "Now if we could all put this moment in a box and tuck it away, we could open it and be reminded of how we all worked together".
I guess ,deeming 9/11 "Day of Service" was a way of accomplishing what Nicky said eight years ago.
Be well,
Ami
